Electric Boats Explained
As with all vehicles, range anxiety is a key issue when converting from diesel to electric boats. Boats equipped with a battery-powered electric motor are called an electric boat or E-Boat. The latest advancements in battery technology have improved range, but most electric boats are suitable for weekend trips only with a range of up to 50 nm between charges. The designs of electric boats are improving as the technology becomes more reliable and the capabilities expand.
Electric boats and related vehicles have lower running costs since they have less moving parts to maintain and they are as you may expect environmentally friendly because they use no fossil fuels, therefore have zero tailpipe emissions (a greener future!). Electric boats also do not require engine and transmission fluid maintenance. Electric boats initially did not have solar panels, because that takes up valuable deck space to be used for passengers. Now, you can find electric yachts where the solar panels are built into the body and go unnoticed.
When it comes to speed, a handful of electric boats can boast a reasonable top speed of up to 50 knots (58 mph). But, the greater the speed, the shorter the range.
The climate is changing and we need to save our oceans from fossil fuels and pollution before it is too late. A boat today is associated with loud noise from the engine affecting the overall experience of hearing the peaceful sound of the waves and the surrounding nature.
